“The condition is used and Excellent for their age. The Cutlery Knives have No Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the cutlery knives are all straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the silver hallmarks are all still legible although as the side plate or butter knives are used antiques the box has some scuffs and wear and the handles have some very small shallow dents, one of the blades has a nasty scratch with some minor corrosion and the set has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that this set of antique dining table tea cake, bread & butter or side plate knives can still be used today and that they would make a superb addition to any cabinet or cutlery collection, I also think that these cutlery knives have a delightful look about them considering that they are almost 100 years old.”
Each Antique Dining Table Tea Cake, Bread & Butter or Side Plate Cutlery Knife measures approximately 7 1/8 inches or 181 mm in length from the end of its handle to the front of its blade by just over 5/8 of an inch or 17 mm across the widest part of its upper handle from side to side and it is 5/8 of an inch or 16 mm across the widest part of its blade.
The presentation case or box measures approximately 8 1/8 inches or 207 mm across its length from side to side by 7 1/8 inches or 181 mm across its width from the hinges to the front catch and it stands 1 1/8 inches or 29 mm tall to the top of its lid when closed.
All 6 tea or butter knives are made from sterling silver handles and each handle is in a delightful shape with a raised relief stepped rib decorated outer border around a central rounded bulbous panel on both sides, the tea or butter knives have blunt silver plated blades that are ideal for opening tea cakes or bread rolls and spreading butter and the cutlery or side plate knives are complete with a hinged gold tooled black leather bound internally fitted blue velvet and cream silk lined presentation case or box that has a sprung push button catch on the front, the tea or butter knives have Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, all of the handles have been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
W & H - Crown - Lion Passant - stylized z
W & H is the famous Sheffield silversmith or makers mark of Walker & Hall, the Crown is the mark of the Sheffield assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the stylized letter z is the date letter for 1917.
